A-Level Subject Combinations: What Universities Expect and Where Families Go Wrong
A-Levels are the point at which the English system stops being broad. Most students take three subjects, some take four, and from that small set a large part of the university landscape is decided. For families used to systems that keep breadth until eighteen, this narrowing feels abrupt and slightly alarming. It need not be, provided the combination is built deliberately rather than assembled from whatever your child enjoyed most in Year 11.
Three Subjects, and Why That Is Enough
The standard load is three A-Levels. UK universities build their offers around three, and a fourth is genuinely optional. Students aiming at the most competitive courses sometimes take a fourth, most often Further Mathematics, and a small number of courses at a small number of universities look for it specifically. Outside that narrow case, a fourth subject does not buy admission. It buys workload.
This matters because the currency of a UK application is grades, not volume. Three strong grades read better than four uneven ones. If your child is considering a fourth subject, the honest test is whether the first three would still be top grades with it in place. If the answer is uncertain, drop it.
Facilitating Subjects and What Replaced the Term
You will still hear the phrase facilitating subjects, which historically described a group of academic A-Levels most frequently required for entry to competitive degree courses: mathematics, further mathematics, the individual sciences, English literature, history, geography, and modern and classical languages. The formal list has been retired as an official designation, but the underlying pattern survives because it was only ever a description of what course requirements actually said.
The practical version of the idea is simple. Some A-Levels are named as requirements by many degree courses; others are named by very few. A combination made entirely of the second kind keeps fewer doors open. This is not a comment on the intellectual worth of any subject, and it is not a reason to avoid a subject your child loves. It is a reason to make sure at least two of the three are subjects that appear widely in entry requirements.
- Mathematics appears in the entry requirements of more degree courses than any other single A-Level, including economics, engineering, computer science and most physical sciences.
- Chemistry is the gatekeeper subject for medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and most biological sciences at competitive universities.

Working Backwards From the Degree
The reliable method is to work backwards. Pick three or four degree subjects your child might plausibly apply for, look up the entry requirements for those courses at a spread of universities, and note the required and preferred subjects. Requirements are published by each university and collected on the UCAS course pages. Do this before choosing, not after, and use several universities rather than one, because requirements vary more than families expect.
- List candidate degree subjects, including at least one your child has not yet considered seriously.
- Read the entry requirements for those courses at four or five universities of differing selectivity.
- Separate the requirements into essential subjects and preferred subjects.
- Build the A-Level combination so that every essential subject on the list is covered.
- Use the remaining slot for something your child will genuinely enjoy and work hard at.
The Mistakes Families Make Most Often
The first mistake is dropping mathematics because the GCSE grade was merely good rather than excellent. Mathematics is the subject that most often turns out to have been required, and reinstating it later is not realistic. If your child is on the boundary, discuss it with the mathematics department rather than deciding at home.
The second mistake is stacking three subjects that overlap heavily, such as three closely related social sciences. Some universities treat certain pairs as insufficiently distinct, particularly where two subjects share substantial content. It is worth checking whether any pair in your child's combination is treated this way by the courses on your list.
The third mistake is choosing a subject because it appears easier. A-Levels are examined against national standards and the perceived easy option is often a subject with a large, strong cohort. The difficulty saved is usually imaginary, and the cost in interest and engagement is real.
A combination that keeps every door open but that your child cannot sustain is not a safe choice. It is a slower way of closing the same doors.
Questions Worth Asking the Sixth Form
Ask which A-Levels the school actually teaches every year, as opposed to those listed in the prospectus, and what the minimum viable class size is. Ask whether the timetable places any of your child's preferred subjects in the same block. Ask how predicted grades are generated, because these will drive the university application. Ask what support exists for the additional admissions tests that some courses require, and when that support starts.
One last piece of perspective for overseas families. UK universities make offers on a small number of grades, which means the system is unforgiving of a weak subject but generous to a student who has chosen well and works steadily. The purpose of the combination is to make that steady work possible. Choose subjects your child can do well in, cover the requirements that matter, and stop optimising after that.
